How to find driver license number by SSN

1. Know the issuing state

Rack your brain and try to remember which state you obtained your driver license. Each state has its own Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) with its own set of rules when it comes to getting back your license number, especially if you only have your SSN.

For instance, the rules for Vermont will be different from those of California. Once you’ve identified your state, you typically want to find its DMV through a quick Google search.

2. Contact the DMV

Dial up your state’s DMV number. For Vermont, for example, the number is (888) 998-3766. But don’t think it’s going to be that easy. We’re dealing with the DMV here, you know. You might need to navigate through automated messages before you can speak to a human. Make sure to select the ‘other inquiries’ option to get you to a human more quickly.

3. Explain that you misplaced your driver’s license

Once you have a real person on the line, explain your situation. Be ready for a little disbelief at first, but stand your ground. “Yes, I lost my license.” “No, I don’t remember the number.” Once you get past this stage, they’ll likely tell you that an online or mail application isn’t going to be sent without the DLN. However, an in-person visit to the DMV will work. And this is where you get to find driver license number by SSN. They’ll usually ask you to bring your social security card and a picture ID.

4. Visit your local DMV

Ensure you have your SSN and a picture ID in hand. There are other acceptable forms of ID such as a passport or state ID. Check your local DMV’s website for a list of acceptable documents.

DMVs are famous for long queues. So, it’s often best to set up an appointment via your state DMV’s website. Depending on your state, you may also have to pay a nominal fee for the duplicate license.
